Archive | Projects

it’s been a couple of weeks since i started this post…(you can see we’re still unpacking in this picture!)

and i have yet to completely finish this project… but i still wanted to share it. because we have 14 windows in our new apartment, it is a beautiful light-filled space.

we LOVE it.

the only time we don’t love the light filled space is at 5:30 in the morning. it makes us grumpy.

to remedy the situation i bought fabric and prepared to make some drapes for our little bedroom.

i used this tutorial by Miss Mustard Seed. she explains everything way better than i could. i just thought i’d show you some of the photos from along the way.

the tricky thing with our bedroom windows is that #1-they’re HUGE. #2-there’s the radiator underneath them so the drapes can’t go all the way to floor. boo. i hate it when drapes don’t go all the way to the floor. but it is what it is.

i ordered my fabric from Joann’s. because we live out in the boonies, the closest Joann’s was at least a 45 min drive and  i just wasn’t in the mood and online is just so easy 😉 but, they were having an awesome sale on Waverly Sun and Shade fabrics… oh look! they still are! i really like this sort of old fashioned looking Chippendale Fretwork design. i also bought the cheapest lining material i could find {what can i say? i didn’t have a job yet!}. as you can see from the picture below… it doesn’t do much…how see-thru can ya get?! but at least it will add an extra layer.

first i measured and cut the fabric and lining. i learned this trick from YHL -to use your area carpets to cut a straight line. genius!!

then puppycakes did his part of the project by chewing on the enormously large cardboard tube that the fabric came on. he sure is helpful.

then Husbuddy brought  home a donut. i don’t eat donuts. it’s a rule. they’re just sugar anyway- who needs that?

…unless the donut is pink frosting with sprinkles. i don’t know why. something inside my can’t resist the food coloring and sprinkles… i’m completely pathetic in my ability to resist the pink. and if it’s rainbow sprinkles it’s even worse.

after i ate it i promptly told Husbuddy he wasn’t allowed to buy me any more donuts.

then i got to sewing. i just followed the tutorial by Miss Mustard seed. the only difference was that i had to use the whole width of the fabric to make the panels wide enough. so i sewed right up to the edge of the pattern.

then i got out our ridiculously small ironing board and crouched on the floor for an hour while i ironed all the seams.

can you tell i don’t get out the iron that often?

then i sewed the slot for the curtain rod. the tutorial said to give it an inch or two… i could have given myself a little extra room but i liked the way it was tight and the way it ruffled.

ta da.

now all i have to do is hem it! {the reason it’s taken me so long to post about this…i really thought i’d get it done first… but i’ve given up waiting!} actually… my goal is to find lace to put on the bottom and to use as the tie. right now i’m just using an old ribbon… but i have greater plans that involve lace.

if i ever get around to it.

for now the light is a little better.   it still comes through because i picked such a cheap lining…note to self… there IS  a reason that lining was so cheap! anyway, even so, it helps a lot. it also makes it feel like we have more privacy. and it adds a little bit of cuteness to the room.

Hanging pictures

Does anyone else put up picture templates to test where they should hang their photos?
I got this idea from the Young House Love blog
They are genius! So I’m living with this layout for a couple days before I put up the real pictures. I also have marked exactly where I should put the nails. All I have to do is nail on the template 🙂

I think I’m going to switch which picture is on top. And I’m trying not to get annoyed that the doors on each side of the TV are not the same height. Oh it’s fun to learn all the quirks of this old house!

what i did when the power was out after the hurricane

granted, the power didn’t go out at our place.

just at work. and everywhere else in princeton. so i had a couple of days to kill… and not being able to go anywhere i had to get my hands busy…

so what did i do?

i’ll tell ya, what i should have done, is some art work. my heart is yearning to paint! but nope, that’s not what i did.

instead, i upholstered my dining room chairs:

they were 20$ each from Target 5 years ago when we first got married.

they’ve moved to 4 different apartments in 4 different cities in the past 5 years.

they were looking kind of gross. they have been dinged up all over the place because of all the moves.

they’ve been through a lot of paint splotches and food spills from the clutz in the house.

no comment about who is the clutz.

{you know, since we don’t even have little kids running around… it’s a little bit embarrassing…}

so it made perfect sense to put pretty new fabric on the chairs right? ok, maybe not perfect sense.

but luckily, it was easy enough and the chairs were cheap enough that i didn’t feel bad about it.

i got out my trusty staple gun. {the first time i even used a staple gun was when i upholstered those stools.} this time though, since the fabric was not that bad…ok, just a little dirty, i just added the new fabric on top of the old one.

{is that ok to admit? i feel guilty for doing that… and i’m not sure why…}

lots of staples. staple staple staple your gun gently around and around… merrily merrily merrily, life is but a dream…

hmmm…? maybe the ringing in my ears is more than just from the gun…

after the stapling, i sanded the chair like crazy. i liked the color of the stain but there were so many nicks on the chair already i decided to just take it further, to distress it to hide the nicks.

i know, i know, some people might hate it.

who knows, maybe some day i’ll paint the chairs…

but at least for now, the chairs are different, pretty and a mix of rustic distressed and elegant.

just the way i like it 🙂

i’m in love.

a weekend project

so i had a little project last weekend that i have been meaning to do for months and months

see that stool on the left?

we found it in a trash can.

we found both of them in a trash can, outside of an unnamed house, we got out of the car, threw them into the trunk and feeling sneaky and giggly drove away all the while hoping that the careless owners didn’t notice that we stole from their trash cans… they were just going into the dump right? 🙂

so this past weekend it was my goal to re-upholster these guys.

i was inspired by a bunch of people explaining how to do it through their blogs(through pinterest!)::

HERE and HERE {they explain “how to” do it. so i’m not even going to try.

i was lucky just to get those things put back together.

they actually seem like they must have once been pretty nice stools! “made in italy” sticker makes me imagine that they were once really expensive or something… but the leather was falling apart… so i bought some pretty fabric from this etsy store…and went to town.

then i decided that i needed some ruffles…

my goal was to make ruffles like these: click HERE to see the most beautiful ruffly stools!

but alas… i did not have enough of the right fabric and was itching to get the project done so i just made little cute ruffles…

and i just tacked the ruffles on in case i didn’t like them in the future… they would be easy peasy to change out. 🙂

they make me happy when i look at them!

those cute ruffly things 🙂

hard work + a staple gun = happy little stools!

now i’m inspired to do some other fun little weekend projects…

how about you? did you do anything fun over the weekend?
