Jesus came to dwell in our hearts. Our wretched hearts.

advent calendar Hebrews 8:10 “ I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts and I will be their God and they will be my people.

It is amazing, when you think about how sinful the heart is, that THAT is where God wants to dwell. Think about your heart for a second. Doesn’t that seem like a crazy, dark, place for the Lord of the universe to WANT to dwell?

It is amazing, again, that Jesus knew our hearts so profoundly and still went through what he did.  When He walked the earth He even said, “what comes out of a person is what defiles him- For from within, out of the heart of man come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and they defile a person.”(Mark 7:20-23) He knew all that, He didn’t walk to the cross blindly. He knew that the cross meant He would be offering to take permanent residence in those dark hearts.

Think about it today as you go about normal day to day moments. I know for me, my heart is full of secrets and evil that I try to cover up and hide and pretend(even from myself!) that it’s not there. I am so selfish, daily making for myself idols of comfort and self service. I am who Isaiah describes daily; “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” (Isaiah 29:13) And I am convicted. Where is my heart today?

And yet, THE WHOLE REASON Jesus came to the world, as a baby, was to be intimately involved in my day-to-day heart issues. OUR day to day issues.  To know me, to know you, to call each of us by name and to save us from our selfishness! To convict me of the darkness and to make me a new. Over and over, day after day, with each and every little thing that is distracting me from HIM.

He wants our heart. He wants to DWELL there.

God desires to turn our hearts into a good dwelling place, to be glorified in our hearts today. TODAY! He desires as the book of Hebrews and the prophets say, to write His laws on our hearts! To be our God. He SO LONGS for us to be His people- not just by what we say with our lips- but in every inch of our hearts.

May our prayer today be Psalm 139:23 “Search me O God and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!” May they be glorifying to you, Oh God! Amen.

{an excerpt i wrote for our church advent devotional}

Merry Christmas dear ones. I pray that we all look at the babe come for our hearts and see Him glorified this Christmas.

being all granola

we love to have granola around all the time at our house. we eat it for breakfast, midnight snack, or anytime on top of yogurt. since Hubby is gluten free i’ve found that it’s most cost effective to make my own rather then buy the gluten free versions of the expensive stuff.

the little miss loves it too. she also loves helping me to make it and thankfully it’s super easy to make! today i thought i’d share the recipe with you!

making granola2 granola

basic granola recipe

ingredients:

  • 4-5 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup of chopped nuts: almonds, pumpkin, walnuts, peacans…anything you like.
  • extras: flax seeds and/or chia seeds
  • spices: depending on taste, 2 teaspoons- 1/2 a tablespoon of each ground ginger and cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1/4 cup canola or vegetable oil
  • 2 egg whites beaten
  • 1 cup craisins or other dried fruit

Mix the rolled oats with nuts, extras and spices. Add the maple syrup/honey and oil. Slowly fold in egg whites(this is the secret to crunchy clusters!). Spread on a large cookie sheet. Bake at 325 for 30 min turning every 10 min. Let cool- it needs to sit all day and maybe even over night to get nice and crunchy. The next day put it in a ziplock bag or container and mix in dried fruit. enjoy!

walking in Papa’s garden

it’s been two weeks since we got home from Colorado. two weeks and i feel like i can’t stop and catch my breath.  i have been dying to go through some of the photos from our time there.

tonight, all i can do is think about walking through my dad’s {Sophia’s Papa} garden. he has quite the garden, you really have to see it in person though to get the full experience. some mornings while we were there, Sophia and i would just take walks through and around the garden. walking    walking through papa's garden she would point out the bugs or run down the garden rows and point at the pumpkins.

…and usually trip.

it’s a good thing she’s so close to the ground. haha.  walking through the garden walking with Sophia Walk with Sophia walk with S  we miss you, Colorado, Nana and Papa, {and all the time with aunties and uncles too} and we miss going for walks in the garden.

more pictures soon…

to the man of my dreams {9 years later}

2015-08-03 11.30.14-1 my dear mr. husbuddy,

9 years ago today i was sure that you were the man of my dreams. i thought you were funny and smart and sexy and adoring  and perfectly imperfect- just for me. i knew i was the lucky one that day. i knew that together we would have a blissful life adventuring together.

if you had asked me that day where we’d be in 9 years, this is not what i’d have pictured. at all. it’s very different. it was hard. it’s still an adventure, just harder then i could have dreamed.

but the truth is, that you are more the man of my dreams today then you were then.

you are funnier now- and somehow way more of a tease then you used to be. you’re smarter now, i think all that greek and hebrew made your head grow. and even more of a loving man then i could have imagined, you still buy me flowers and surprise me whenever you can and all my girlfriends are still jealous about that. ha! and you are MY sexy date… as we push the stroller around the park again because that’s what we can afford to do on our dates these days.

i still think i’m the lucky one. that you stick around when i’m a dork, when i’m mean, when i’m a klutz. you still love me and adore me and you still want to go on adventures with me. i’m so thankful for you, my Mr.

i’m the lucky one and i know this now more then ever before. it is only by God’s grace that we can say we’re more in love then on that day, but 9 years, man! we’ve made it so far, God has brought us through so much and i’m so excited to see where the next 9 take us!

i love you and thank God for you! 2015-08-02 18.25.33 2015-08-02 18.25.41 2015-08-02 20.12.54 2015-08-02 20.13.37 2015-08-02 21.09.07

and can we just sing Dancing in Minefields one more time?

{pictures from our early anniversary trip to Annapolis. if you haven’t been there, you should visit! it was our 3rd time visiting and we still had so much fun!}

one person’s trash is another’s treasure…

that’s such a silly old saying. i’m not sure this counts as “treasure” but it is funny what you find in other people’s trash cans.  going for a walk, pushing a stroller and walking the dog, a few weeks ago i found someone had thrown something out for the trashman to pick up. well, hello, treasure! so what did i do?

stuck it on top of the stroller.

let’s just say, this has happened more then once…

{like that time i found a box of dishes on the side of the road and turned it into a mops project… just saying… my eyes are ALWAYS open!}

this particular time we found this:

found

let’s just say i looked really cool walking home as fast as possible. {and why is it i always find things the farthest from home?}

anyway, that very day i washed it down and got to work. here is the before. before i think if i found this at a store, i probably wouldn’t buy it. but for free? and all i’m spending is the cost of a can of spray paint? i am in desperate need of outdoor furniture, so why not start with a little side table? wouldn’t it be cute with the rust gone and with a plant sitting on it?

and i must admit, i was scared that Husbuddy would be annoyed with me for bring home trash again. he is afraid of our house looking like white trash from all the random pieces i find… ha. so i got to work right away so he couldn’t complain!

during  at the moment i’m loving all things yellow and happy. so that’s what i went with! it took a few coats to get into all the nooks and crannies but it was SUCH an easy project. and how cute is the finished product? after  can you believe someone was going to dump that in the landfill?  front porch honest to goodness true picture of my front porch. see? it needed a little happy. and now if i could just convince Husbuddy to build a swing, this porch would be an awesome place to sit in! {or maybe i’ll find an old metal bench or something that someone’s throwing away…} TABLE REDO  until then, a happy front door will have to do.

what about you? find any trash that you turned into something beautiful lately?

a little family vacation

last week we were blessed with a gift of a cabin on a lake in the poconos for a couple days. it was lovely to have a little family vacation before the summer church schedule kicks up a notch. we had lots of rain, but there was also a mostly clear day that we were able to do a bit of exploring. mt pocono3

the cabin is right next to a little beach area. Sophia loved splashing in the lake and ADORED all the ducks and the swan that came to visit. mt pocono we took Sophia on her first canoe ride. she loved it once we got in the boat! it was getting ready that made her nervous.   mt pocono2 she was super excited to be in the life jacket… haha. {actually it was the fact that i made her turn around and face daddy instead of the swan.} mt pocono5  our little adventurous family. i was so proud of her. she did fantastic out there on the lake! and well, you know Sammie loves a good ride on the lake… {haha that post is here} mt pocono4

she loved it i promise! mt pocono pda other things we did included a little PDA in a local brewery, mt pocono games  and we played lots of games during naps and after baby bedtime.

such a blessing to have this time together! right now Husbuddy is down in Florida at general assembly. i’m SO missing this.

have any of you ever been to the Poconos?
