pumpkins {day 24}

day 24

“And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.  And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root,they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.  Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.”

Matthew 13:3-8

there’s a little amish farm at the end of our road. when i walked down there today i saw the field was filled with discarded pumpkins and weeds. it’s like the farmers came through and cut off all the leaves and took the “good” pumpkins and left the others to rot. i kinda wished i didn’t have my camera so i could pick some up and take them to our porch. but i’m afraid that would be stealing. but i wonder why they’ve left these to rot? {if you know, please share! i’d love to know why!}

as i think about this parable of Jesus’ … i wonder if there isn’t another group of seeds… that fall on good ground, that grow well and strong, and then, because they’ve taken in so much and haven’t produced any fruit they start to rot from the inside. they are stagnant and grow stale. they should be used to nourish others! but they’re just sitting there like these pumpkins. rotting.

how many of us are rotting from the inside because we’re not actively seeking to be used by God? we just take and take and take from church, from worship, and try to learn as much as we can to be filled up for ourselves… but then we don’t pursue God’s purpose of sharing His word and serving His people?

these are just some of my random thoughts for today. and by no means do i try to add to the parable of Jesus!! i just know that i can be guilty of being so focused on myself that i don’t give to others the way God wants. sometimes i get caught acting like this Christian life is about me going to church and doing the “right thing” and just filling up on what i can from God. but truthfully,  this life isn’t about me or even about being filled with Jesus. it’s about living for Jesus. it’s about glorifying God in everything we do.

One Response to pumpkins {day 24}

    It is possible that the Amish practice the old-testament command to allow for “gleaning”; which is one of the commanded ways to provide for the poor. (Or, it might be that those pumpkins they left are blemished in some way and given the low price for pumpkins…)
