Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Eve!

we’ve had a busy and eventful Advent season. i can’t believe it’s already Christmas! a few highlights from our season are: picking out the tree, all three of us getting sick, having Sophia’s first hot chocolate, mama and daddy planning a cool diy gift for Sophia(another post), playing with the nativity set(can’t you hear Sophia saying, ‘of course Tinker bell had to be there to worship Jesus too, Mama’), daily admiring of the tree and all the lights and decorations, mama crazy busy with etsy sales, potty training(WHAT!? why did i start that in such a busy season, you ask? ahhhh who knows…cause i’m crazy?), getting a cool advent wreath and doing daily advent devotionals.

it has been a beautiful, precious, crazy season. Sophia is at such a fun and busy age. we are very excited to celebrate together tomorrow!

here are a few pictures from our month:

Isaiah 9: 2-7

“The people who walked in darkness
    have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
    on them has light shone.
You have multiplied the nation;
    you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
    as with joy at the harvest,
    as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
For the yoke of his burden,
    and the staff for his shoulder,
    the rod of his oppressor,
    you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
    and every garment rolled in blood
    will be burned as fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon[d] his shoulder,
    and his name shall be called[e]
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
    to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
    from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.”

Merry Christmas friends! we send you our love and pray the Lord reminds you of Himself this Holiday.

Car on Holiday wouldn’t in be fun to go get our christmas tree in this car? tee hee. in high school my dream car would have been a little Volkswagen bug. a pink bug would have been perfect! not exactly a family car, but it’s pretty darn cute, don’tcha think?

and guess what?! it’s in my new society6 shop just in time for Christmas!

hint, it’s really cute on cards:

Arise, shine!

Isaiah Angel-small

“Arise, shine, for your light has come,

and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,

and thick darkness the peoples;

but the Lord will arise upon you,

and his glory will be seen upon you.”

Isaiah 60:1-2

this is verse is beautiful. i keep reading it over and over. i can’t stop thinking about our Light coming and chasing away all of the darkness. Our Light, our Lord of lords and Prince of Peace, HAS COME.

then this morning, i was reminded of this verse:

“He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.”

Hebrews 1:3

this Christmas, may the Light of the world bring you hope. Hope that where there is light, there can not be darkness. He has WON and sits on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

last night i just couldn’t resist painting another angel. this Isaiah verse has been stuck in my head all month long and i finally gave in and got my paintbrushes out! it’s been over a year since i painted something just because. over a year.

i painted it just for me. it’s not perfect. it was rushed. i just had to get it out. does that even make sense? it just needed to be put on paper{or in this case a piece of wood}

but i felt like creating it was a way to process the power that the light has over darkness. where there is even just a glimmer of light, there can not be complete darkness. if the little light of a tiny candle can remind us that darkness can not rule, think of the power of THE one true LIGHT has over the darkness in my heart! over the darkness of this world!!

i also felt like i had to DO something to obey the command: Arise, Shine! it is a command. it is a command to do what the Lord has called each of us to do! i can SHINE because the Light lives in me. i am called to live every day shining with light of the One who made me and loves me. Jesus our Lord, came to bring peace and light to the dark world. and to our hearts.

and i wanted to share it with you. to remind you, that Your Light HAS COME! Arise and Shine, my friends, for your Light has come!

Merry Christmas eve!

homemade stockings

we have been married 7 years. that’s 7 Christmases. and we have never had our own Christmas stockings. i blame that on the fact that we have never had Christmas at our own place before. we’ve always traveled to one of our homes for Christmas, so we’ve always had our stockings from growing up. this will be our first Christmas at our own house!

fabric

so i decided we needed our own stockings as we start our own traditions.

the problem was that store bought stockings are expensive! i guess, i should clarify, the ones i like are expensive! pretty ones from west elm or pottery barn can run you 20-30$ each! {of course they are on sale now…but i doubt you’d get it in time for Christmas! i should have planned ahead after Christmas last year}  but at that price, and since i wanted 3 of them, {i had to include baby girl!}  that meant i was going to spend up to 60$ on a little decoration…

not exactly in our budget…

first i found some wool felt fabric that i loved. i wanted plaid. i was looking for a red version, but i fell in love with this black and white version. it was 14$ a yard. i bought 1 yard and that was plenty for all 3!

pattern

then i printed out a basic stocking pattern {i found this one from Amy Butlerand cut out the pieces. i didn’t want the plaid to run straight up and down, i wanted it more on an angle so i probably wasted some of the fabric that way. but i still fit all 3 so it worked for me.

i roughly used the Amy Butler directions…but i didn’t have lining or trim or anything fancy like that, so i just flew by the seat of my pants. seems like that is how life is these days anyway… ha!

sewing

i sewed them together and made a little fold over top. i have the rough edges showing. like i said, SEAT OF MY PANTS… which means, i just went with what felt right and didn’t make it perfect. the rough edges may fray down the line, but i figure it gives it more interest then if i had sewed them inside out like regular stockings.

i’ll just keep telling myself that.

{and probably in a year or two i’ll want new ones anyway!}

stocking

here’s the finished view. i added a little ribbon hook and big fat red button for decoration. then i cut out large letters to distinguish who’s stocking is who’s. and yes, baby girl has her own stocking with her own initial…but it’s still a secret, remember?! {unless by the time this publishes she’s made her grand arrival…which means you probably all know already!}

close up detail

they’re a little rough and TOTALLY IMPERFECT. but i think they’re cute.

stockings hangin

especially all lined up in a row on our railing. just waiting to be filled with lovely little gifts tonight.

now if only we had a mantle to hang them on… don’t worry, it’s on the to-do list for next year! ha.

advent: glory in the highest {Luke 2:8-14}

8x8 print of Bethlehem Angel Mixed Media Painting

Luke 2:8-14

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

Forunto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

blessings my friends. let us join the angels singing, Glory to God in the highest!

Christmas open house

welcome sign

welcome to our Christmas open house!

finished wreath

i’m so glad you’re here. feel free to come on in, grab a cup of  mulled spiced cider and have a look around.

christmas open house photo

we had a open house for our church last weekend. a lot of people couldn’t make it. so i thought i’d share some photos of how our house is decorated for Christmas for all those who couldn’t make it. and of course, you gotta have some Christmas music on in the background.

Hark the herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinners reconciled”
Joyful, all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic host proclaim:
“Christ is born in Bethlehem”
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

christmas open house8

Christ by highest heav’n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin’s womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
“Glory to the newborn King!”

christmas open house5

Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Son of Righteousness!
Light and life to all He brings
Ris’n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing

“Glory to the newborn King!”

  christmas open house6

this little angle painting is still one of my favorites. and this nativity came home with me from Mexico last Christmas!

christmas open house3

our pretty little table looked pretty bare at the beginning. but everyone brought cookies to share. christmas open house4

and i had a little bit of japan on the table from my adventures this past year there.

christmas open house10

for those who didn’t want cider, i froze  some cranberries in the ice cube tray to add some color to the water. i thought it was pretty. i’m pretty sure most people thought i was weird. haha.

christmas open house7

this is one of my favorite prints that i bring out every Christmas. it’s from Lindsay Letters . oh, her prints are just gorgeous.

christmas open house

and this “Names of God banner” that hangs on our tree is from Lemonade Makin Mama.  i got it this fall for our first Christmas in our new house. i just LOVE it. i want to always be reminded the reason for the season. i want God to be proclaimed louder in our house then anything else every Christmas. this seems like just one little way to do that.

christmas tree

here’s our tree with all the lights sparkling. so much fun!

christmas openhouse2

one of my dreams for our new house is that everyone who walks through that front door would feel God’s presence in this place. that it would be a place where HE alone is glorified. decorating for Christmas is fun and all, but my main goal was to make the home welcoming and cozy and peaceful for all who walked in.

christmas open house1

and it seems i hang wreaths everywhere to do that. ha! the yarn ball/ornament wreath is a project i did a couple years ago based on this tutorial.  it’s so quirky because i made is too bottom heavy instead of even all around. but i still love it.

christmas open house11

and i LOVE boxwood. i would have boxwood wreaths in every room if i could. so i usually get a bunch of clippings when we get our christmas tree and make my own tiny wreaths. but this year, Husbuddy let me get a big wreath! i was so excited. i hope it never dies.

christmas open house13

and as you can see, this is what the table looked like when everyone was gone. oh.my.goodness. everyone brought cookies but it would seem that no one ate any! you all better take some for the road!

  christmas open house9

thanks for stopping  by and visiting our open house. in no way is our house perfectly put together. i still have hopes of making Christmas stockings and getting an advent calendar and all the little details that we’d have at our homes growing up for the holidays. but it takes time and we are slowly putting together our traditions as a little family. i am SO excited to share these traditions with baby girl soon!  i hope that you felt inspired and loved through this visit. i hope that we all prepare room in our hearts for The coming King.

Joy to the world! The Lord is come:
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing.
