rain showers in febuary

there’s been a lot of rain the last few days. there was even a tornado that touched down near our church! it’s been crazy. but i’ve been thinking about showers and blessings and this from Charles Spurgeon’s Morning by Morning:

“I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be showers of blessing.” Ezekiel 34:26

Here is sovereign mercy–“I will give them the shower in its season.” Is it not sovereign, divine mercy?–for who can say, “I will give them showers,” except God? There is only one voice which can speak to the clouds, and bid them beget the rain. Who sends down the rain upon the earth? Who scatters the showers upon the green herb? Do not I, the Lord? So grace is the gift of God, and is not to be created by man. It is also needed grace. What would the ground do without showers? You may break the clods, you may sow your seeds, but what can you do without the rain? As absolutely needful is the divine blessing. In vain you labour, until God the plenteous shower bestows, and sends salvation down. Then, it is plenteous grace. “I will send them showers.” It does not say, “I will send them drops,” but “showers.” So it is with grace. If God gives a blessing, he usually gives it in such a measure that there is not room enough to receive it. Plenteous grace! Ah! we want plenteous grace to keep us humble, to make us prayerful, to make us holy; plenteous grace to make us zealous, to preserve us through this life, and at last to land us in heaven. We cannot do without saturating showers of grace. Again, it is seasonable grace. “I will cause the shower to come down in his season.” What is thy season this morning? Is it the season of drought? Then that is the season for showers. Is it a season of great heaviness and black clouds? Then that is the season for showers. “As thy days so shall thy strength be.” And here is a varied blessing. “I will give thee showers of blessing.” The word is in the plural. All kinds of blessings God will send. All God’s blessings go together, like links in a golden chain. If he gives converting grace, he will also give comforting grace. He will send “showers of blessing.” Look up today, O parched plant, and open thy leaves and flowers for a heavenly watering.

{ you can find Morning by Morning here or order the book here. it’s so good! emphasis mine}

i love that part about it does not say God will send us drops of blessings… but SHOWERS! God’s grace comes in showers- and usually with such a measure that there is not enough room to receive it all. wow. i’ve been thinking about that the last few days. what do you think about that? what do you think about Spurgeon’s comments?! aren’t they beautiful? i hope you have some inspired pondering from this today.

 here are the latest pictures for the lent project- i think i accidently missed a few days!

more photos for lent

“For I desire loyalty and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.”
Hosea 6:6

“You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it;
You are not pleased with a burnt offering.
The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit.
God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart.”
Psalm 51:16-17

i’m pretty sure my posts for lent are going to be REALLY sporadic for when i post and then really random in content. HA. oh well. today i’ve been thinking more about fasting and sacrifice and worship.

God doesn’t desire our sacrifice, He desires our worship. He desires for us to notice Him, see Him working, and give Him ALL the glory.

and that’s more of what i desire to think about and do through these photos. Give HIM all the glory for the gifts of each day.

day8

  • day 6- the silly little girl who “helps” me take the dog outside when it’s freezing cold in her socks. the handle is broken so it doesn’t have a latch- she can just push it open. i probably need to fix that…
  • day 7 – those pig tails! that was my aim when i took the photo but then she said “cheese” and gave me a million dollar smile. SWOON and all the HEART EYES! she is a delight and a gift.
  • day 8 -homemade granola. because God has provided everything– down to the granola that i make regularly so that my gf/df hubby can have a yummy cereal. i feel so homey and house-wifey when this is cooking and it smells like heaven when it comes out of the oven and sits on the counter to get all crunchy and yummy. i also read something the other day about how we should try to remember that it hasn’t always been the case that we get three square meals a day- it is only in this modern age and it is a blessing and gift from God alone! {from desiring God on Why we pray for our meals) praise the lord for each little bite.

outtakes: {because i couldn’t help but share some of these!}

helping with sammie2 she can barely reach the handle. {gah, adorbs} which makes it really hard to pull open the door. the tip toes!  girl and baby squeezing baby  she wanted a picture with her baby {of the moment-it changes every five minutes- she loves ALL the babies} and then she couldn’t help but give it a big ol’ squeeze. d’awwwwe

“I do not know You, God, because I am in the way.
Please help me to push myself aside.”

so…anyone out there joining me for the photo a day challenge?! let me know!

a picture a day for lent

it’s been a while. AGAIN. i have just about fallen off the face of the online world. not because i don’t want to be here, but because i feel like i’ve lost my voice and momentum a bit. i’m hoping that just starting, just doing, will get me going again.

so, today, i’m here with my yearly post about lent. about a week late. ha.

i’ve decided to continue with my photo a day project for lent again this year. (you can read the explanation from last year here) So, for the next forty days up until Easter (minus sundays) i will again be attempting to take a photo a day. with my camera–> not just my phone! {clarification to check my lazyness lol}

 And really, the goal is: to get my camera out and notice God’s giftsevery.single.day.

i just want to NOTICE GOODNESS.

have my EYES open and try to SEE what God has placed before me for today.

“Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!” Psalm 34:8

why do this for Lent? because lent is a time of preparing our hearts for Easter.  it is usually a time of fasting or giving something up. but the point of giving something up is to notice more of Jesus. to see Him work. if you just give up sweets to go on a diet because it’s the “religious” thing to do, you’re crazy and you’re a pharasee. ha. we can talk about that later if you want. but if your heart is truly in the right place, when you fast, you can focus on the Lord. well, i’m here taking pictures instead of fasting, trying to see what God has placed in front of me every single day. To taste Him and see Him.

in my laziness i’ve delayed writing this post because i couldn’t decide if i really wanted to actually get going and do it. but here it is. my beginning. although late, at least i’m starting! HA. just being honest!

Care to join me? care to be late like me? Maybe you can make it a goal to notice the good around you too! i’d love it if you’d let me know if you’re going to be noticing goodness these next forty days (or so) too!

day1 day2 day3

day4 day 5

  • day 1- new color on the walls!
  • day 2- that sweet grin
  • day 3- coloring valentines in our pjs
  • day 4- making rice krispee treats fancy on a diy cake stand.
  • day 5- flowers from my sweetheart.

isaiah 53 and lent

does it ever blow your mind that the prophets of the old testament talked about Jesus before Jesus was born, before He did anything, before He died for us?  that those prophets prophesied exactly WHAT Jesus would do? that this was His plan all along? sometimes i am just in awe of the glory of God. this past week we’ve been reading a lot of Isaiah 53 in the She Reads Truth study and i am just struck at how it speaks exactly to Jesus, God’s servant and son.

Isaiah 53:4-12

Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    yet he opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people?
 And they made his grave with the wicked
    and with a rich man in his death,
although he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth.

Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;
when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.
 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors.

what do you all think of that?!

with lent being almost done, i’m almost done with taking a thankful picture a day. in some ways this is sad, and i want to try to keep up the practice. in other ways i’m relieved that the pressure is off. hee hee.

  • day 35-i was SO blessed to get to go the Night to Breathe conference with Sarah Mae. it was so inspiring and i still feel like i am trying to process what i learned. i tried to just soak it all in! {two pics yes, because 1 was a stalker photo of Sarah Mae and the other was of the beautiful table decorations}
  • day 36- OH.MY.GOODNESS. little miss sweet pea was hard to handle on this day. she was as busy as ever and as loud as ever and i just wanted a couple moments of peace and quiet. i think when Husbuddy got home that night i handed her over and went and laid down for a ten minutes. i’m telling you, you can tell she’s a little rascal sitting in the pantry with one sock on and one off and the look she’s giving me… oi! i was tempted to shut the door and finish my baking in peace. hee hee. but i’m THANKFUL for these moments… i think.
  • day 37- little miss independent. she has such a fun, adventurous spirit and i am so thankful for that. she is also SUCH a daredevil. i barely would make it to the bottom of the slide to catch her most time. she wanted to go headfirst most of the time too. HA.
  • day 38- sometimes i catch my breath in amazement that i live here in Amish country! seeing 6 horses pull -whatever this is- multiple times on my way to church still surprises me and makes me smile. it was such a beautiful spring day today!

  • day 29– grandparents arrived for a weekend visit!
  • day 30– cuddles with a sweet uncle are just about the cutest thing
  • day 31 –the mr. got his cello out to play for a few minutes. that sound is heavenly and i’m thankful for it!
  • day 32 –a walk in the “park” /greenhouse at longwood gardens is divine when it’s freezing/snowing out!
  • day 33- phases. oh it’s sometimes annoying that she keeps taking her shoes off, but it’s just a phase and i will look back at how cute it was that she ran around with her shoes undone or carrying one
  • day 34- the boys built a couple garden beds so we spent the day filling them with dirt! and sophie got covered in it all and liked to bring me chunks of dirt to inspect. we are so excited to start growing more things in our own garden this year.
