this morning was like most mornings. after Sophia had a couple cuddly sips her milk on my lap, we got breakfast ready. eggs and applesauce were on the menu this morning. mostly because we don’t have any other fruit in our house right now. grocery shopping is on the to-do list! so i gave her applesauce while i made some scrambled eggs for both of us. she is getting very independent and wants to feed herself. so with very careful small, little spoonfuls, she proceeds to spill applesauce down her front. she maybe got one or two actually completely in her mouth. i don’t worry about it though.
then i gave her some eggs. i started out trying to feed her but she was very much in a “i’ll do it myself” mood this morning so i handed her the fork and the plate of eggs. she LOVES eggs. so she goes for it. breakfast is actually the one time of the day i’m not fighting her to get her to eat. she then proceeded to take turns between hands feeding herself. one fist grabbing a chunk of eggs while the other fist, holding the fork trying to stab it and then direct it toward her mouth before she drops it down her front. well, actually the eggs fared better then the applesauce.
after a few minutes she tells me very matter-of-factly that she was all done. how does she tell me? she waves her arms up and down in her version of sign language. she totally has her own language though. it does not resemble sign language in any way. ha. so i grab the wash cloth to wipe her down.
she starts pointing and fussing about the tiny- really itty bitty- specs of eggs i’ve missed on her tray. what she doesn’t realize is that she is COVERED. her face has a mixture of egg and applesauce and milk. the front of her shirt is soaking wet from spilled applesauce. her hands have applesauce and egg in the crevices. she is so covered so it is quite comical that she would point and whine about the little piece i missed while trying to pick the egg up off her highchair instead of get upset with what is all over her. she is SO funny.
but as she was whining, i immediately thought of what Jesus says about judging others in Matthew 7.
He says, “…why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is a log in your own eye?”
we are so quick to notice what is going wrong outside of ourselves. we are so quick to point and judge and see what is wrong with other people. but we don’t even look in the mirror. we are the ones covered from head to toe in applesauce and eggs but notice when there is a tiny spec of dirt that someone else hasn’t picked up. i do this. i am the hypocrite that Jesus is talking about!
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” Matthew 7:1-5
may we, friends, ask that Jesus show us the logs in our eyes and applesauce that covers us. may we seek Him and humble ourselves and avoid sitting on the judgement seat where really only HE belongs.
O Lord, how i am humbled that You would use a little girl covered in applesauce to show me my own sin.
“Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:9-12
thanks for letting me share some random thoughts on tuesday!
