my little friend Owen {and God’s providence}

today, i’m going to share with you a little bit of my heart. i want to talk about friends. about money. and about the providence of God.

how is that for a way-over-the-top  and ambitious blog post? ha!

i have a little friend named Owen. if you’ve followed me for a while you’ve heard about him once or twice… hee hee. we first met almost 3 years ago when he was born February 2011 with a LOT of complications at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). he is a champ of a little boy! he was born without his esophagus connected {you can read his whole diagnosis and full story hereand the first few days of his life were really scary.

then after his first birthday he got really sick again and ended up down in CHOP for an extended stay. he’s a little fighter though and after some of the hardest months of his poor parent’s lives, he came home.

it hasn’t been easy, but now he a smiley little dude who loves to chat with his grandparents on skype, go on walks with his dad, and read books with his mom. he is a little rock star!

he still has to be fed with a feeding tube through the stomach and he has multiple therapy sessions  every week in order to help him grow the best that he can. he is learning how to push himself with a little gait trainer and loves his tricycle.  he just had surgery this summer to give him a thumb! for Halloween he was Max from his favorite book Where the Wild Things Are!

even though he has had such a rough start in life, this little boy is one of the happiest little boys i have ever met. i am so blessed every time i get to hold him or laugh with him!

he reminds me of God’s providence in everything in life. God is in control of this little boy’s life and that is evident EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. Owen was not expected by the doctors to continue breathing when they took him off the breathing tube in the first couple weeks of his life… but God continue to fill his lungs with air. he was a living miracle from the beginning!

there have been countless miracles in his short little life. the power of prayer has been amazing to watch.

and every day, it is all God.

to His glory, this little boy is a living, breathing testimony that God provides. you can follow more of his story on his blog. but i wanted to mention one more thing here.

his parents need to buy a van because the little dude is getting bigger. he may soon have more equipment that will be hard to fit in their car and soon he will get too big to be able to lift in and out of a car seat. Joel and Sharon also have a little brother on the way, so to fit two carseats into their current car along with Owen’s special stroller is out of the question. the problem is that these vans are WAY beyond the normal price range for a car. $67,000 more than a normal car!! especially to get outfitted with all the special needs equipment! on their blog Joel is asking for any help that anyone would want to give. {please feel free to read Joel’s post here}

so i wanted to share with you, my dear friends, the opportunity to provide anything you can. no matter how small.

God provides. He provides Owen’s breath every day. He provides our very breath. and He also uses us to provide for others.

the same day that Joel’s blog came out about the van, in my devotional i read these verses:

“Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise I may have too much and disown you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or I may become poor and steal and so dishonor the name of God”  -Prov. 30:8-9

“You can not serve both God and money” -Matt. 6:24

“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it” – Psalm 24:1

see, we all struggle with money. Husbuddy and i are constantly discussing it, fighting about it, complaining about it… the list goes on. we never have as much as we wish we did. it is so easy to feel like there isn’t enough to go around us, so how can we give anything? but that’s the thing. if we believe and trust that God provides… that He provided the money to begin with… that He gives us what we need for TODAY… we know without a doubt that He will continue to provide for our today...every day

and if God provides the very breath that we breathe, how can we hold on to money like it’s ours to keep?

this post is not to guilt you OR ME into anything, but i just wanted to share some of my heart.

i wanted to share with you my love for this little boy and his family.

and i wanted to share with you HOW AMAZING it is that God provides everything we have! even our very breath!

thank you in advance for all of your help and prayers!! may you experience the wonder of God’s providence in your own life today.

providence {day 16}

day 16

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19

ok, so i’m not really talking about God supplying my need for cupcakes. lol. {it is kind of a need these days with all the pregnancy cravings though! ha!}

or even baby showers.

or even gifts for the baby for whom the shower is for.

i’m talking about God knowing my heart and knowing that i need community. and God supplies it. ABUNDANTLY.

baby shower2

we are overwhelmed by the baby shower that was thrown for us this past weekend at our church. it was crazy how many ladies were there and how much love i felt from each of them. i can NOT get over the fact that we just arrived a few short months ago and already they love us and treat us as family.

we are SO blessed by this community. baby shower3

God knows what we need. He knows the basics… like food, a roof over our heads, and even “things” like cars or carseats for our babies. and He supplies them.

but He ALSO knows the other needs of our heart. HE PUT THOSE THERE. how could He not know about them? He knows that we are a creature who needs to have people around us. He knows we need friends and family and love from others. He created it that way! and HE provides for our every need. even a relationship- that may seem like an extra thing that would just be nice to have, even if we don’t need it to survive. He has created us to be a people who walk together towards Him. He said so Himself in Genesis 2 that “it is not good for man to be alone”. yes, this is used a lot in marriage ceremonies but i believe it’s for every relationship in our lives. we need friends and family to survive, to be encouraged, and to point each other every day to Him. baby shower4

 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Hebrews 10:24-25

it may seem like the baby shower that our church gave for us was a way to bless us with “things” needed for the baby. but what it really did was bless me (and Husbuddy) with love abundant and it showed me that God ALWAYS provides… God provides even a place for us to belong… in community.

for that, i praise God.

why we moved to Lancaster {PA}

whew. this could be a really long story! it’s a story of God’s providence in our lives to bring us to this place. it’s a story  that’s a work in progress.

back in December, scratch that…it starts earlier. back in 2008 Husbuddy applied to go to Seminary… ha, ok, that’s going to make a really long story. and you’ve been around for the seminary part! what you didn’t know, is that originally Husbuddy went to seminary to continue on and do his PHD and then become a professor or teacher. that was what he thought he wanted to do.  but through a couple rather large, life altering events that happened while we were in Princeton, God’s voice was heard in Husbuddy’s life.

God called Husbuddy to preach. to teach and to love His people. to be a Pastor.

whew! at first it was a shock to me.  we moved all the way from Idaho to New Jersey to become a professor! it was still ministry that we felt called to, but to be a professor meant to me to have a stable profession of teaching at a college. {little did i know then… that’s not really a stable job…but that’s what i thought} but then God started to work on my heart. i was reminded of the many times that i’d asked Him to use me, to use us. i was reminded of the very reason i had started dating this man back in 2004…because i had been shown that we could glorify God better together, then we could on our own.  {i had made Husbuddy work pretty hard at pursuing me for a while until God revealed that to me…hee hee} we are a team. i knew that then, i know that now. i don’t necessarily know my part of the “team” here yet, but at the time i just tried not to worry about it.

last year, Husbuddy graduated from Princeton Seminary with his MDiv. Techincally, he could have started looking for a pastor position then. but we felt called to go to the northshore of Boston {read about what i said about that calling last year, here} so that he could study more about how to preach. that’s why we were in Gloucester for year. he graduated in May from Gordon Conwell Seminary with his THM in Preaching.

now, at least theoretically, he knows better how to preach. this was really important to him because he feels that declaring God’s word is one the most important things a pastor does week in and week out… that makes him tremble with fear because God’s word is such a mighty thing! he learned so much this past year, and he is excited to be able to put his theories into practice…

now, back to December…Husbuddy was starting to apply to every pastor position in the Evangelical Presbyterian Church  {or EPC -our denomination} he could find. as most first time pastors do, he got turned down a lot. he didn’t have enough experience! it was ok, i knew that God wouldn’t bring us this far without a plan for our future, but the stress level this winter around our apartment was rather high.

thankfully, Husbuddy is very type A- as in, totally organized and on top of scheduling- so he was very diligent in getting out his resume and information. he kept me informed about which churches said maybe and which ones said no…but honestly they all blurred together in my head. i only kept asking about “the one in Pennsylvania” because at first i was annoyed that he even applied there.

…ok… give me a break. i was annoyed because it was only TWO HOURS away from Princeton, NJ! hadn’t we just left that area? weren’t we wanting to live closer to our families and in a different part of the country? {there are so many reasons i did NOT like NJ} BUT little did i know, two hours away was really a million miles because of how different it is here, that’s a relief 🙂  but more on that later…

really, my annoyance just goes to show how ignorant i am and how if i really trusted God with my future like i said i did, i wouldn’t have been such a baby.

anyway, this “church in Pennsylvania” kept in touch pretty regularly. one of the things Husbuddy was most impressed with was that they were prompt and always kept him informed about the next step and what was going on. THIS IS HUGE for my type A man. so many churches completely blew him off and never even responded to his emails or phone calls. that’s one of his biggest pet peeves… so the fact that this church in Pennsylvania was responsive encouraged him.

then one day he got asked to do a skype interview.

after that… he got asked to come down to meet with the church! and they asked me to tag along!

that weekend was an amazing weekend of witnessing God’s providence and peace. it was full of peace because by the end of it we KNEW without a doubt, this was where we belonged. we felt that if we said “no” to this church, we’d be saying “no” to God’s providence.  after that weekend, we KNEW that we belonged there and that God had been working -both in the history of the church and in the history of our few years- to bring us to this place.

we moved almost two weeks ago. it feels longer.

we moved with thanksgiving in our hearts and hope in our steps because we were just following the road that has been divinely marked out for us. we are SO thankful and SO humbled that God actually had a plan for our little lives and that He has chosen to show us just a glimpse of how He is working.

we are also so thankful for these amazing people. we have been SO BLESSED you guys! so blessed. i can’t even describe how welcomed and loved we’ve already felt!  we are excited for what these next weeks, months and years will bring with our new family and friends.

Husbuddy has now been an assistant pastor for 6 days.

that means i have been a pastor’s wife for 6 days. i have no idea what i’m doing in that department, but i figure i better just show up,  love people and God will do the rest. {i have lots of things to talk about here, but we’ll leave that for another day}

and that’s why we moved to Lancaster, PA.

thanks for reading our story! hopefully the testimony of God’s providence gives hope to you. God IS working in every little detail in our lives. He wants to use us if we will let Him. and guess what, there is peace in that.
